  • Do you think the vice president should resign because of the hunting accident?

No. This story has gotten out of proportion, just like the Monica Lewinsky story under Bill Clinton.

The White House is really benefiting by this story though because nobody is talking about Iraq at the moment. It's like they planned for this little story to get out of hand, and stay that way for as long as possible.

I would really like to know about the guns and alcohol issues of this story though.Do you think the vice president should resign because of the hunting accident?
Then Clinton should have resigned when vince foster committed suicide. Ludicris questionDo you think the vice president should resign because of the hunting accident?
No. He should resign because he misled the country about Iraq.
No. It was an accident. Should anyone lose their job if they got in a car accident?
No, he did not committ a crime he had an accident. Maybe all the I's weren't dotted and the T's all crossed, but it was still an accident.
accidents like that don't result in arrest, there's no doubt it was an accident as the other dude was some really big campaign contributer and a lawyer, of all the people to shoot.

I bet he would have died had secret service medical attention not been there. A pellet was actually lodged in his heart, he had a heart attack, they still hadnt taken it out. If he dies there's going to be even more flak.

    Excellent because I hate bush.
No. But it sure is funny.
No, accidents happen. If it truly was an accident I don't really see how this could come into play in politics and give reason for the vice president to resign.
No, it was mistake done by a ';Man';, not by the Vice President. However he must be punished/penalized.
No, after all he shot a lawyer, hasn't everyone wanted to do that one at one time or another...lol
No, it was not a job-related accident. Perhaps he should be charged with reckless endangerment or assault with a deadly weapon, but I seriously doubt that will happen. If the man dies, on the other hand, he should certainly be charged with negligent homicide at least, possibly manslaughter (if killing someone in a drunk driving accident is manslaughter, killing someone in a drunk shooting accident should be as well). However, it wouldnt matter if he was charged or not, the President could always pardon him.
No. I do not like this Admin. but this is just getting too crazy.

had a few days of laughs though.
No, say you had an accident while on vacation. Should you then lose your job?

What gun should i get my 11 year old son for hunting?

please list the name make and Cal or Ga and were to get it and priceWhat gun should i get my 11 year old son for hunting?
well im 11 and when my dad and i go hunting i use a 410 it isn't that hard to shoot and its a good beginner gun u can buy them at any place that sells guns have funWhat gun should i get my 11 year old son for hunting?
    Hello!

If your hunting is going to be focused around bird hunting, with a shot gun, I would start him with a single shot 12 or 20 ga. The single shot will force him to concentrate, and make each shot count, since he will not have the follow-up shot at hand!

If your hunting is going to be focused on small game (rabbits, etc) I would suggest a .22LR, again a single shot, for the same reasons I suggest a single shot shotgun!

Not only will you teach self discipline, you will be teaching safety! New England Firearms makes sone very good quality single shot shotguns! I would suggest a good Remington single shot for the .22.

If you have either a Cabelas or a Bass Pro SHop, these are the first places I would try, right after your local neighborhood gun shop!

    Good luck and good shooting!
Hunting is Horrible OMG get a life lady why are you here in the hunting forum?

Now on to my fellow sportsman. Question of my own first, does your son have any education when it comes to safe handling and use of a firearm? If not then the first thing you need to do is attend a state wildlife sponsored education class, which all states now require once he learns how to safely handle and be respectful of the firearm I would would start him with a nice BB gun and teach him the basics and see just how much he has actually learned as a shot from a BB gun doesn't hurt near as bad as a .22lr or .410 shotgun, which is my next step, after you feel that he is ready to move up then there is no better gun on the market as far as caliber/gauge to start a youth with then a .410 shotgun, it's great to learn to shoot it has minimal recoil it is an excellent gun for small game and can be had in a number of configurations but I recommend that you get him a nice single barrel as they are inexpensive and very safe due to the fact that the hammer has to be ****** and the trigger pulled for it to go off and if he really gets into hunting and shooting he will want to move up in gauge size rather quickly to either a 20 or a 12 gauge a Remington 870 pump gun for under 300 dollars.which is a very versatile and an incredibly reliable firearm will be your next purchase.

Now on to the rifles. A good 10/22 Ruger .22LR with a decent scope just can't be beat, they are incedibly cheap to shoot, have no recoil are about the best 22lr on the market and will lead directly into larger centerfire rifles for hunting big game, such as a .243, 6mm, 7mm-08 in youth models, then some a little larger as he gets older would be a 30-30, 308, 270, 280, 7mm, 30-06, 300 win mag.

    So go this route:

Education, then BB gun not for hunting but practice.

2nd: a New England single barrel .410 and a Ruger .22LR for small game.

3rd: A .243 caliber deer rifle and a .20 0r 12 gauge 870 pump in Remington. Savage, Browning, Ruger, Winchester are all some good options just depends on how much you want to spend. Check Academy sports, Wal-Mart both will have what you're looking for you can also get something used a at pawn shop and they can often help with some good advice as well as a lot of pawn shop dealers are hunters and shooters also.

Take him shooting as often as possible because practice makes perfect and it's great father son time. Congratulations as you will create memories that will last a lifetime, My 12 year old son killed his first deer last with a Custom Single Barrel Thompson .280 It was a moment that I will take to my grave with me. Good Luck and be SAFE.
It depends upon your son and what he will be hunting and how often he will be hunting. He should start out with a bb gun/ air rifle. After that, he would need a .22 lr for target practice/squirrels/rabbits. I would recommend a Ruger 10/22. It can be single round loaded if he starts blasting stuff. There are a little under $200. You should find a friendly local dealer. If he is hunting deer or varmints, get one of the rifles that the others have mentioned in .243 Winchester. For bird hunting, get a youth sized Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, probably in 20 ga, or if recoil does not bother him or he is larger/stronger in 12 ga. Either is around $250. My son got his 12 ga when he was 10. He had borrowed a .410 or 20 ga before that. One option if he will not be shooting too much and needs a centerfire rifle and shotgun is to purchase a New England Firearms rifle in the appropriate caliber for around $270, send the receiver to the factory and have them fit a shotgun barrel to for $100 or so. You can also get additional rifle caliber barrels for about $130. These would be single shot firearms.
My now 12 year old has his own 223 and 243 single shots and has shot my 30-06 with Remington Reduced Recoil ammo--went though a box of 20 in half an hour. He can shoot his 243 all afternoon if I let him,40 rounds isn't unusual. I hand load so the cost isn't so bad at least. My son is average size and though the recoil rocked him pretty hard, he did shoot the 30-06 with my hunting load too. So, you don't have to get 22LR as an intro gun,but they do come in handy for economical practice. The single shot T/C Encore or H%26amp;R (NEF) Handi-Rifle are both good choices,we have one of each and the H%26amp;R is near perfect for my son in 243. We load 95 grain bonded core bullets for deer, only way I would recommend the 243 for deer is with a 90 to 105 grain quality bullet.

A bolt action would be the best choice in regards to value and ability to grow with the shooter. Remington,Savage,Weatherby make a Youth/Standard stock package you can purchase. Bolt actions are inherently accurate and flexible in application. It is hard to find a poor choice in new rifles these day (save for the Remington 770,not their best effort), so you can purchase an economy minded Stevens model (low end Savage) or Marlin XL 7 for near $300. The Mossberg ATR is sometimes less, but isn't one of my favorite rifles because of the bolt being a little too stubborn. Some Savage models will be less than $400, and the Weatherby Vanguard/Howa 1500 is normally $425. There is a package Howa with Hogue stock and Nikko Sterling scope at $495 retail in short action cartridges like 223,22-250,243,308,that is a good deal, as many packages use a poorer quality scope. I prefer the $500 Tikka T3,as does my son,for the ergonomics, smooth 70 degree bolt and clean lines. I own Brownings, and the Tikka gives me many Browning options at 60% of the price.

I'm just doing for rifle,shotguns--heck,20 GA from any major maker is going to do well for upland game, but you will need a 12 for waterfowl or turkey.
You haven't said what your son will be hunting so I'll take my best shot. If your son is new to firearms I would agree that a .22 rifle would be a good place to start but I don't agree with the person who said a Ruger 10/22 would be a good rifle for him.

I'm going to assume that you, yourself, have little to no firearms experience... if you did you probably wouldn't be asking the question you are.... so I'll explain my opinion. The Ruger 10/22 is a semi-automatic weapon. This means that every time you pull the trigger and it fires it automatically chambers another round and is again ready to fire by just pulling the trigger. This is great for someone more experienced but it scares the heck out me to put a semi-automaic weapon into the hands of any new shooter.... let alone someone who's just 11 years old.

Here's my suggestion for you. Take your son to a local gun shop and ask them to show you the differences between a semi-automatic rifle and a bolt action rifle. With a bolt action rifle the shooter must manually work the bolt to eject the spent cartridge and chamber a new one. The weapon is not ready to fire instantly after the first shot. This makes an accident much less likely. I'm sure you'll understand this much better after you've gone to the gun shop and seen this for yourself.

I won't even begin to suggest a make or model for you. Go look... see what your son likes... see what fits him... see what feels right to him. A firearm is a very personal item... what's right for me may be totally wrong for you.

Then all you need is someone to teach the boy to shoot his new rifle successfully. Maybe enroll him in a hunter safty course or your local range may provide shooting instruction or maybe you have a trusted friend or neighbor who would be up to the task. At any rate... get some instruction... and have fun... and be safe. Maybe you would even try putting a few rounds through his new rifle yourself?
well if he is new to shooting i would say just get a pellet gun till he understands what he is doing, then i would say get him a nice .22. a good brand is Ruger 10/22, they range in prices depending on where you look but i got mine for around$300. depending on what he would be shooting i think a .22 would be perfect for a 11 year old.
243 or 270 winchester depends on how big the kid is i started out with a ruger 7mm-08 and im 14 i was 10 when i first got to go on my own hunt untill i was 10 i hunted with dad watching him. and started shooting when i was 8
mossberg 500 youth model in 20ga. This is a reliable gun that will fit him perfectly. If you plan on deer hunting with it as well u can get the slug barrel which is great.

price around $250, but i ahve seen them cheaper
I started out with a Mossberg 500 20 ga. It was a great all around gun, small enough to use comfortably at 12. With the slug barrel and interchangeable choke tubes it was good for anything from doves to deer.
    Remington 870 in 12 or 20 gauge.

Weatherby Vanguard or Savage in .270 to 30-06. Or maybe you want to look into a Mauser 6.5x55mm.
    hunting is horrible

Why do cats and dogs make jerky, robotic-looking movements when hunting?

I just figure that because their muscles are stiffened up as they are attempting to be quiet and methodical with their movements, it ends up looking that way.Why do cats and dogs make jerky, robotic-looking movements when hunting?
I'm not totally sure but it seems that I read that cats hypnotize their prey, that's a long process but once hypnotized, their prey will die even if they don't catch it. I picked my cat up once and brought the mouse in the woods. The next day, I checked and the mouse was still there but dead, even though my cat didn't touch it.Why do cats and dogs make jerky, robotic-looking movements when hunting?
By jerky, robotic-looking movements I think you mean stealth.

They hunt like that to keep noise to a minimum.

Can someone possess a crossbow for hunting purposes legally, with a felony conviction?

Depends on were you live. try to google search laws around were you areCan someone possess a crossbow for hunting purposes legally, with a felony conviction?
    Texas...

A felon is not allowed to posses a firearm

From Texas 2008 Outdoor Annual from the DNR

Possession of firearms by felons: A convicted felon, regardless of where the conviction occurred, may not possess or use a firearm (as defined by Penal Code, 搂46.01) to hunt in this state. Under Penal Code, 搂46.01, a muzzleloading firearm is lawful if it is an antique or curio firearm manufactured before 1899 or a replica of an antique or curio firearm manufactured before 1899 that does not use rimfire or centerfire ammunition.

As for hunting/fishing with a crossbow, yes and no.

Lawful Archery Equipment: Includes longbow, recurved bow, compound bow, and crossbow.

鈥?May be used to take NONGAME fish only.

    Crossbow

    鈥?br>

Any person may use a crossbow to hunt game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds) during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season. Telescopic sights are lawful.

    鈥?br>

ONLY a person with an upper-limb disability may use a crossbow to hunt deer and turkey during the Archery Only Open Season, provided the person, while hunting, has in their immediate possession a physician鈥檚 statement certifying the extent of the disability.

    鈥?br>

An upper-limb disability is a permanent loss of the use of fingers, hand, or arm in a manner that renders the person incapable of using lawful archery equipment.

    鈥?br>

A crossbow is lawful for game animals and game birds (except migratory game birds and as provided above), provided:

    (1)

    the crossbow has a minimum pull of 125 pounds;

    (2)

the crossbow has a mechanical safety; and

    (3)

the crossbow stock is not less than 25 inches in length.

    -----------------

So, as I read this, and I will check with the local game warden next week when I have my monthly lunch with him, In Texas so long as it is not ';Archery only'; deer season then you can use a cross bow to hunt any game or non-game animal with a crossbowCan someone possess a crossbow for hunting purposes legally, with a felony conviction?
you should be able to at the very least possess one because bows of any kind are not considered firearms, as for them being a weapon then a butcher knife in your kitchen would be considered the same thing so don't worry about it. hunting with a crossbow depends on the state your going to hunt in, your better off hunting with a regular compound bow if you are physically able from what i have been told crossbows are not as accurate as the compounds being produced today and a crossbow is more expensive. Go to huntersfriend.com/crossbows to learn more about their performance.
yes...bows are not primitive, and you do not need them resisted. When you buy a rifle or shotgun you must have a background check done, when you buy a muzzle loader or bow you do not need a background check everyone can buy them. They just don't want felons to posses a weapon that can shoot a-lot of shots, or that would be a major threat.
Check your state regulations. In Georgia, hunting with crossbow is illegal unless you have a special permit which is usually only given to individuals with a diability and cannot use a bow or firearm.
you could even own and hunt with a muzzleloader if you want to...you just cant own a real firearm...cross bow...air rifles...and muzzleloaders are all legal for you to hunt with and own
    I hope not.

    Felons do not deserve weapons.
depends on the state rule, but a crossbow is still considerd a weapon not a firearm . at leat in NYC
depends what the felony was for.

Hunting on Pennsylvania State Game Lands?

I have not hunted or held a license to hunt in about 15 years. I am interested in getting started back up but do not have anywhere to hunt. I understand that PA has state game lands where hunting by the public is allowed, but how does one go about it? Is special permission needed from the state? Do they give you an assigned area in the lands to hunt (I know this is done on several military bases)? I have not been able to find anything but maps of these lands on the internet. Any information would be appreciated.Hunting on Pennsylvania State Game Lands?
Well I have hunted PA all my life but never on State Game Lands due to over population of local idiots shooting at anything that walks. Im almost a 100% sure all you need is a license and a gun and you can walk right on and shoot on any game land. Im from York County and we have quite a bit of game lands around us. I know there is some big ones up near Dillsburg where I go to shoot but your best bet is to call, Pennsylvania Fish and Game and ask them to be sure. The best idea though would be to ask someone to hunt their land because the odds of you getting something would be much much better. Good luck and email me if you have any other questions, I have property upstate and know plenty of people in PA that could help you out. If I knew where in PA you were thinking about I could give you a better answer.

Also if you go buy a license from Walmart and get the booklet that comes along with it, they have all of these areas marked as well as the regulations of firearms and anything you want to know.Hunting on Pennsylvania State Game Lands?

Should I get a ground blind or a ladder stand for deer hunting?

well first off can you bow hunt on public land????and wht shoud i get i want to put a stand/blind on a trail or if u have a better idea where to put a stand/balind plz tell me.but would it be easier to shoot a deer from a stand or a bind on a trail or where ever its best to place a stand.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Should I get a ground blind or a ladder stand for deer hunting?
if your on public land you have to go with a climbing stand because you cant (state game law) and dont want to (someone will steal your stuff) leave anything in the woods. a blind is ok but i like to be up off the ground where you can see something coming especially when bow huntingShould I get a ground blind or a ladder stand for deer hunting?
For bow hunting, either is useful, and both are legal.

A blind will hide you well and you will be able to freely draw without too much fear of detection.

A tree stand will allow you to see animals sooner and that will help you with drawing, but you can be detected drawing you bow in a stand.

I like a tree stand, but for cold conditions, a blind rocks. You can stay out of the wind, as well as move around an enjoy hot bevs, or eat, or simply relax without being detected. Nothing beats a good blind durring an all day hunt.

In a blind though, when you see deer in the woods, they are right there on top of you with little warning, so don't get too sleepy.

    Hope this helps.
Yes, you can bowhunt on public land. That's about the only way I do.

    Ground blind or ladder stand? Like many questions, the answer starts with ';it depends.';

First, scout the area you'll hunt. If there are no decent trees to put a stand, get a ground blind. If the land is flat and densely grown with grass and shrubs, you may not be able to see through it well, so a tree stand would be better.

    Stand placement 101:

    a. Topography: place a stand near but not on known travel routes, anything that naturally funnels deer into a smaller area, obstacles that cause animals wandering in from many directions to follow the same path (rock outcrops, edges between forest/field, ';inside corners'; where animals frequently like to access commercial food crops, creeks, long slash piles, etc). Also, best bet is on travel routes in-between bedding areas, food, and water, not necessarily at any one of these.

    b. Wind: always stay downwind or crosswind to the likely travel path. Never be directly upwind of the area you'll watch.

    c. Access: make sure your access route doesn't disturb the deer your hunting, either going in or coming back out. You don't want to leave a scent trail going through the area you'll watch. Some areas are only suited to hunting part of the day in order to not disturb anything while going in.

    d. Scent control: Keep your clothes scent free, don't wash with aromatic soaps and shampoos. Smoking is a huge giveaway. So is garlic pizza. Getting animals close requies close attention to not smelling like anything.

    e. Use natural camoflage: On public land you may or may not be able to leave a tree stand or groud blind in place (either legally, or to keep it from getting stolen). On private land you can often leave things in place for a long time and animals get used to them being there; not so on public land. So place your seat wisely. In a tree? Try to be nestled among a group of closely spaced trees with lots of branches at your height to break up your outline. Try not to be skylighted (same reason you shouldn't walk at the top of hillcrest, always just below itto keep from being silhouetted). Ground blind? Try to put it in or near other ground cover, whether in shrubs, or under overhanging tree boughs.
Yes, you can bowhunt on public land. You will need to check the rules on the land that you are hunting for hunting dates and seasons. I would also use a climbing stand. I recommend the Ole Man Vision. I would practice shooting my bow from the tree stand at and elevated position of 20 to 25 feet because it takes a little getting used to shoot from above! Always where a safety harness while in the stand.

If you feel safer in a ground blind or just would rather hunt off the ground I would by a Double Bull Dark Horse blind. They work great for bowhunting.

I would set up 20 yards from the trail(s). Preferably where two or three trails intersect! An outstanding location to find an intersection is where several ridges funnel into a wide hollow.

Another great strategy for late season bucks is to hunt a natural funnel such as a narrow strip of woods between two fields.

    Good luck and shoot straight!!

Yes you can bow hunt on public land. It all depends on where you are hunting. Blinds are hard to bow hunt in unless you buy a great big one but that's going to cost a lot of money. I would recommend in buying a climbing tree stand. It would be lot easier shooting a deer from a stand. I would recommend on putting the stand about 15-20 yards off the trail. Make sure you are up about 15-20ft and have good cover that way you don't get busted.
If you get an elavated shot the shot is more affective when it goes into the deer. A stand is also better because the deer do not look up as much as they would on the ground. I prefer a stand. And yes you can bow hunt on public land but only during that season.

    Tell me wat happens.
Bow hunting is legal on most public land, but before you go make sure it's legal at your chosen place.

I prefer tree stands because you get a better view, your scent is not as likely to spook deer, and I think it's easier to get a shot off without the deer seeing you.

    Good luck!
A ground blind may be cheaper, but a stand is better quality as deer don't usually look upwards for predators, none of their main ones attack from above.

And, yes you can hunt on public land.
get the lightest climbing stand you can get, hunting on the ground isn`t a good idea during gun season on state land.
stand is waaaaay better, i think. yes you can bow hunt on public land but u have to be eligable and have a tag.

What is the point of hunting this bear if not for revenge?

Why do people think that once an animal tastes human flesh it becomes addicted, shunning all other food sources? Isn't it wrong to kill an animal out of some erroneous anthropomorphic sense of justice?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20090804/tod鈥?/a>What is the point of hunting this bear if not for revenge?
I agree,it's the whole killer shark mentality, one shark attacks someone and the hunt is on,50 sharks are killed and no one knows if they got the right one. What is the point of hunting this bear if not for revenge?
Actually once an animal react to humans as a food source it is always prone to do so again. Not because it has the taste but because it did so in the first place.

I might defend a dog for biting someone, but if that dog was hunting and trying to eat people I think he's all done.
Bears arent stupid and if they find out it is easy to kill a human, they will do it again. That includes children and the lame and the elderly. I think it would be sensible to remove the bear
To keep it from eating one of your children.
That bear is serious business. Needs to be taken care of ASAP!
It's not addicted, but less afraid of man and with a new food source.
perhaps if you yell loud enough they will tranquilize it

First have a archery shop set up the bow for you. If the bow is not set up correctly it will not be accurate. Second make sure you arrows are the right length and spined correctly for your bow. Third- practice maintaining the same anchor point and form on each shot. That's the basics, but there are hundreds of little things that you will soon learn that can help your shooting. Do you think the vice president should resign because of the hunting accident?

What gun should i get my 11 year old son for hunting?

well im 11 and when my dad and i go hunting i use a 410 it isn't that hard to shoot and its a good beginner gun u can buy them at any place that sells guns have funWhat gun should i get my 11 year old son for hunting?

They hunt like that to keep noise to a minimum.

my government class has a mandatory debate and me and my partner got stuck with why out of season hunting should not be penalized and we need some tips and ideas... thanksIm doing a debate and i need reasons out of season hunting should not be penalized.. For government class?
    Tough.

I'd try the government may not always have the most current information about game heard sizes or health conditions, and occasionally local game groups may be aware of populations that need additional thinning out.Im doing a debate and i need reasons out of season hunting should not be penalized.. For government class?
I know in my state (Alabama) they had a special hunting period to thin out the deer population in a state park and were going to donate all of the meat to local shelters. What they found was that most of the deer (due to over-population) were so malnourished the meat couldn't be donating. It was very sad. So overpopulation is definitely a good point you might cover.
how about if a person needs to legitimately hunt for food for his family, especially in these trying times. it should not be unlawful to kill what one needs to eat.
You can get a permit around here to kill deer out of season if they are a nuisance, like if one is constantly eating your crops, or flowers.

Is it legal to shoot archery in New Hampshire without a hunting licsence if you aren't shooting animals?

My 14 year old daughter is really into archery. She owns a recurve bow and arrows, but only uses it for competitions, not for hunting animals. We are traveling to New Hampshire next weekend and I want to know if it is against the law if she wants to go shoot in the woods. She will probably just be aiming at targets pinned up on trees, not harming animals. The house we are going to is isolated in the woods with no one around, so there is really no chance of her hitting anyone. (she wouldn't hit anyone anyways because she has won several archery awards)Is it legal to shoot archery in New Hampshire without a hunting licsence if you aren't shooting animals?
She should NEVER shoot at trees with an arrow for several reasons. Mostly it tears up the arrows and it's dangerous. Plus if a game warden does catch her in the woods she will be fined.

I suggest going to a sporting goods store and buying a target. There are some that look like bean bags and others that are a hard Styrofoam. They would be easy to take on the trip.Is it legal to shoot archery in New Hampshire without a hunting licsence if you aren't shooting animals?
Just to play it safe call the Department of Wildlife in that state and ask them.

I would bet they will tell you don鈥檛 shoot the trees, to get a 3D target or some other target that stands up on it鈥檚 own.

To prevent her, her equipment and the trees from being damaged.

Most states have laws where you cant even drive a nail or screw on to a tree because of the damage it can cause to the tree.

Their trying to protect our forest from damage that you can understand.

But other then that if she is just target shooting no license will be needed.

Most states don鈥檛 require license for any one under 16 years old to hunt anyway.

But she not hunting so that makes her safe in two ways.

Tell her I said she is an intelligent Lady for not shooting trees.

Hope this was of some help.

    D58
to answer your question directly, YES, stop at most any sporting store, Dick's in Concord or others further up north or south, they sell the ';self sealing'; Styrofoam (ethafoam tech. name) type, she can shoot them all day for years and they will not break down. As long as she is not practicing in a populated area and she knows there is plenty of CLEAR area behind her target in case she does miss so that nothing or no one gets injured, it is perfectly legal, and a great sport I might add. AS JZ points out, this is assuming you are on PRIVATE PROPERTY
If she's on private property, it's perfectly legal. If she's on state or public land, there is no target shooting permitted. There are government owned public shooting area's, but they're very rare these days. You are perfectly legal on private property (in rural areas such as your situation) and on private shooting ranges, such as sporting good store ranges or club ranges. Most cities and towns have laws against bow or gun target practice within city limits.. but it doesn't sound like you have that problem. Hope you have fun!
I would think if you are target shooting safely with the bow it is legal anywhere.

What is a good, bolt action rifle that is good for hunting deer in NY for around $500?

You are aware that Deer is shotgun only in the southern tier...... Rifle is for upstate NY.... The Remington 700 and the Savage 11F are nice rifles with a decent price.... Stevens and Mossberg have excellent economy models that are actualy fairly decent... .270 is best for deer, some prefer 30/06 which I think is a little much unless your making long range shots.... I suggest .308. There is a lot of mil surplus and bulk .308 available which makes target practice time fairly inexpensive. The other ammo sizes are expensive. Of course use the good stuff for hunting but use the mil type fmj to get real familiar with your rifle and optics.....What is a good, bolt action rifle that is good for hunting deer in NY for around $500?
500? Depends on if you are going to want to use a shotgun or a rifle. Shotgun you'd be best to look for a 12 gauge with rifle stock probably in mossberg, winchester, remington, or savage and this should be in short range (max 125yds) only. Long range or short range I would prefer 270, 270WSM, 30-06, or a 308. If there a lots of brush and thickets you might be shooting in then 30-06 with blunt tip bullets is your best option. What is a good, bolt action rifle that is good for hunting deer in NY for around $500?
Im not too sure if METROPOL lives in NY or not. If he has he prolly has been under a rock for some time now. HONESTLY I mean no disrespect, but the purpose of this site is to get accurate answers. He does give some great info regarding rifles however. In NY (for the last 3 years) you ARE able to use a rifle in the southern tier! Remington makes a model 710 in .270 and .30-06. Comes with a variable power Bushnell scope. Will run ya probally just over $400. Either caliber is great for our NY deer. Shot the biggest buck of my life with myne!!!!
I'm from Australia but I am fairly sure there's no deer in NY lol.

Howa, Remington 700, TikkaT3, Sako, Browning, the list is endless.
Remington or Savage Brand in 30-06 caliber.*~~ Buy used and save $$$.* A new rifle doesn't shoot any better than a good used one.***
I would suggest a Remington 700 in 308, one of the best medium priced rifles there is for deer.

If the land you want to buy is for sale as hunting land does that mean you can't build on it and live there?

I see all the time hunting land for sale. Just wondered if it was limited to just hunting or if I could build a house and live on the property. If the land you want to buy is for sale as hunting land does that mean you can't build on it and live there?
In my rural area land advertised as hunting land means no utilities, no septic, no well. Also be aware there is hunting in the area. This is to warn potential buyers what to expect. It is zoned agriculture but you are allowed to build a home. It is an expensive proposition since you must pay cash for the land. Bringing in electric can cost upward 50k, septic and well another 25k, Cut in a road for a driveway another 20k

And you haven't even started to build. If the land you want to buy is for sale as hunting land does that mean you can't build on it and live there?
Sassy is right. Its most likely zoned agricultural. Which means you can live on it, but it probably is so far out of the way that no one has built in utilities or road access. You should look closer at the land. Some ';Hunting Land'; might be suitable for someone not interested in recreational hunting land but interested in remote homesteading.
It MAY be possible to build a house there, but generally hunting land is advertised as such because there are obstacles involved with being able to build. If the land were available as buildable, it would be advertised as such, simply because buildable land is worth more than is 'hunting land'.
If you are willing to use a septic tank and bring in your own water

    bottles, you can build there.

also consider this, you can buy most anywhere in the US

for now, cheaper than you can build
It would have to be Zoned - Residential to build a home there. I'm guessing the zoning on it is probably, recreational or agricultural.
    In Alaska you can!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20090804/tod鈥?/a>What is the point of hunting this bear if not for revenge?

I love fishing! small boats, big boats, casting or trolling - so long as there are available refreshments and I don't have to do the getting the fish off the hook or gutting part!

What is better for duck hunting a 26' or 28' barrel?

I like the 28 inch barrels...... It feels more ';pointable'; in my hands if that makes any sense to you..... Stop by the sport shop and shoulder each shotgun.... Swing then and see how they ';feel'; in your hands....What is better for duck hunting a 26' or 28' barrel?
Duck hunting is not like upland bird hunting. You are restricted to steel shot, or some other substitute, that is not as heavy as lead. A longer barrel will extend your range.

Most of you shots will be at birds flying towards you. Aim a little in front of the bird. 'Swing' is not that critical. The longer the barrel the better, to the extreme even. Check this out:http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu6pu2BxJ8w鈥?/a>What is better for duck hunting a 26' or 28' barrel?
I seriously doubt the two inch difference is going to change anything. Your choice of load will make a far greater difference.

Of course, if it was between an 18'; or a 20';, that might make a slight difference, but at 26 or 28, it's all the same.

    Good Hunting.
Damn you should be able to knock em outta the sky with either a 26' or 28' barrel but it'd be kinda awkward to carry lol. But seriously now I'd go with the 28'; barrel, the longer the better, keeps your spread tighter longer
You should be fine with the 26 incher. If you plan on taking more long shots then the 29 incher would be better, however, if you start taking long shots, you are going to injure birds that will not drop until they are out your retrieval zone.
Either one, but the 26'; would handle and swing better on target.*

These have to be NOVELS, like Where the red fern grows. Oh and it can not be Old Yeller or Where the red fern grows. I all ready read them. And not how to books or learn more about type books. What are some novels about hunting?
    Swift by Robert J Blake

Johnnie tells of his first bear-hunting expedition in the Alaskan Wilderness with his dad and their ';knowledgeable'; dog, Swift. On the third day of their trip, a grizzly crashes out of the woods and attacks them. When Johnnie's father shoots and misses the bear and instead breaks his leg, he tells his son to take the dog and go for help. The dramatic oil paintings are a blend of realistic and impressionistic style created with a thickly layered palette whose texture helps convey the haunting grandeur and loneliness of various landscapes of forest, tundra, mountains, and river; the cold is palpable. The compressed text describes in staccato style some exciting events; but it lacks character development and context. Some of the elements are not fully credible. At one point, Johnnie falls into an ';icy'; beaver pond, and later, he cannot make a fire because his matches are wet; it seems somewhat unbelievable that he can survive the cold and snow despite his frozen feet and frozen clothing.

    http://www.amazon.com/Swift-Robert-J-Bla鈥?/a>

Weirdo by Theodore TaylorEnvironmentalism provides the political backdrop for this story of the courage and self-acceptance acquired by ';weirdo'; Chip Clewt, 17, in his fight to save the bear population in a North Carolina swamp. Badly disfigured in a fire, the boy takes refuge from the world with only the bears and Tom, his boss, for company. But when Tom disappears, Chip enlists his new friend Samantha to help prove that the man was murdered by poachers. In an eloquent debate that proves informative and moving, human and animal rights are pitted against each other. This murder mystery/love story/environmental thriller by the author of The Trouble with Tuck weaves an uncommon spell. Deftly drawn characterizations, from the admirable to the loathsome, and an engrossing journalistic format are among the many strong points that make his timely and compelling novel a winner.

Reloaders: Which 223 bullet for hunting whitetail deer?

I intend to hunt whitetails this season with my AR-15. What type of bullet is best and what is the heaviest bullet that I can load to magazine length without sacrificing powder capacity?

My state allows 223's for deer and I am not looking for suggestions for other calibers, I am simply trying to load the best and most humane 223 that I can shoot from a semi-auto.Reloaders: Which 223 bullet for hunting whitetail deer?
My favorite is the 60 grain soft point that Nosler discontinued over 10 years ago. It mushrooms like a good 30 caliber and has good weight retention.I only have about 400 left and then I'll be sad. Try the Sierra 69 grain Match King. It breaks apart when it hits, but the back half of the bullet stays together, usually with the jacket folding around the lead core so it penetrates well, but sometimes doesn't go as straight as I'd like after entering a deer. I'm planning to try the Sierra 65 grain Game King bullet. It looks good and Sierra doesn't make bad bullets. Since you are using a semi-automatic be careful if you use a lead nose bullet. Sometimes lead scrapes off as the bullets feed into the chamber. This usually isn't bad, and to test for it fire a couple rounds, drop the clip, and take the loaded round out of the chamber and look at the point. Hollow points like the Sierra Match King and polymer tipped bullets feed better. You also have to know the twist rate of your rifle's barrel. To use heavy bullets you must have a twist rate of one turn in 7 or 8 inches to stabilize the heavy bullets. Some bullets that stabilize in my Ruger Mini- 14 with a 1 in 7 twist will not stabilize in my Ruger 77 with a 1 in 12 twist. Although I haven't used it yet, I'm sure the Sierra 65 grain Game King will stabilize in the slow twist barrels. First try the Sierra 69 grain. It should do well.Reloaders: Which 223 bullet for hunting whitetail deer?
if you are huning with the .223 and your reload your own brass than go with the 150 gr there more expansive but there heaver and will go futhere thats what i use for shooting in maches at 1000yds and you can kill a deer over 1000 yrd with out a scope with a .223 i done it

If you are going to do it, use the Sierra Game King or the Barnes Triple-Shock X-Bullet. There is a bewildering number of .224 bullets out there and 'match' type and fmj military type are not for taking game.

The reason fmj is used for military is that the strategy is to would the enemy and not kill the enemy. Exactly the opposite for responsible, humane hunting.
Which .223 bullet for hunting Whitetail? Seriously, NONE.

Whether it is legal in your State or not, and it IS legal in Texas, it is NOT a good choice for deer hunting. The round is too slim and too light to humanely, consistently take deer size game. Deer are tough. They have heavy bone and muscle tissue which easily deflects light bullet condemning the deer to a slow, lingering death and the hunter to... NO venison.

When I was younger and more foolish I tried this round out on deer and had to shoot them twice. WRONG. A mistake I don't plan to repeat. Get yourself a proper deer rifle. A .25-06 comes to mind, but if you want smaller get at least a .243 Winchester.

    Best.

    H
I would not recommend the .223 at all. Use some bigger, A .270 is minimal . A .30 caliber is preferable.
Any bullet is okay to shoot a deer with in your 223; please have a friend with a more realistic hunting rifle accompany you so the poor animal does not run off and suffer a slow death from having a dozen 22 pellets in his/her body. The 223 was a mistake from the git-go from which we are slowly recovering.
a 69 grain is a good one. but, remember it's bullet placement.
and that's all you're going to do to a deer with a .223 is wound it.
I've shot a mule deer with an ar-15 using nothing but 55 grain fmj's. The US military uses the rounds on Iraqi's... so I don't completely understand the moral dilemma in using it on a deer. As with any caliber, a good hunter isn't going to take a shot that he can't successfully kill a deer with. It took one shot for mine to go down. I was actually hunting coyotes that day and had the opportunity to take a deer... so I would use a 65 grain or bigger next time just to be on the safe side. I wouldn't worry much about bullet expansion because with this small of a round, it's the speed... or percussion of the bullet that does the damage. The 223 is also on the verge of stability in the air.. and becomes completely unstable upon impact. Meaning it tumbles like crazy when it hits. I shot mine in the left lung and it came out of the right shoulder. If you can't get a solid lung or head shot, just let it go or call it in closer. If he's running away from you.. it's definitely not worth taking. I use wolf ammunition.. and have never had a problem with it. Pick a round that you're comfortable shooting with.. doesn't have to be the biggest baddest thing out there, because you won't be able to afford to practice with it. Plus.. the standard 3200 feet per second is already plenty.
Regardless of what I, or anyone else, thinks about the .223 as a deer round, choose a bullet your rifle shoots accurately. I know of at least 3 different rifling twists available in AR style rifles. Last month my buddy was trying out different loads in his .223 and his groups varied by more than 2'; at 100 yards. His recommendation for deer is a hunting design bullet, not a hollow point that is near 60 grains and shoots accurately out of your rifle.
No SERIOUS hunter or reloader would consider using such an underpowered cartridge to try to take an animal as large as a whitetail. This is one of the reasons it IS illegal in the majority of serious hunting states. It IS INHUMANE to even TRY.

The .223Rem.-5,56mm is underpowered for deer, that is why it is illegal to use in the great majority of U.S. states for anything other than 'varmints'.

Leave the 'poodle shooter' in the closet unless you're going 'paper punchin' or 'rat shootin' and get a DECENT caliber rifle for real hunting.
I use 64 grain power point. According to ballistic charts at certain velocities between 100 and 200 yards a .223 has an equal to or greater knock down force than a 145 grain 30-30 round nose bullet.(the 30-30 lever action type bullet has claimed more American whitetail than any other cartridge)

Have you ever been coyote hunting with hounds?

Its a sport Kinda like coon hunting, but your hunting coyotes.Have you ever been coyote hunting with hounds?
The people who do this in Oklahoma do it nothing like coon hunting. They use greyhounds, along with multiple vehicles with two way radios, and sometimes even use spotter aircraft. They turn the dogs loose in a section (square mile of land) where a coyote has been spotted, and the dogs run it down then tear it to shreds.

Though I am a lifelong hunter, I do not consider this to be a humane sport in the least, and am personally disgusted by it.Have you ever been coyote hunting with hounds?

My crazy niece Jolene and myself used to take the dogs out in the jeep in Maricopa (Arizona), and shoot coyotes and the wild dogs that ran with them. Jolene used a Mossberg 500 Cruiser pistol grip shotgun. This was a necessary endeavor because once abandoned domestic dogs started running with the coyotes, they had no fear of humans. Many people would be injured and even some deaths from these packs.
It been a long time, but yes a fellow took me coursing coyotes. It was a learning experience for sure! And a lot of fun, well not for the coyote!

I want to get a shotgun for next hunting season?

next season i want to use a shotgun instead of a bow, ive only been bow hunting and ive never shot a shotgun before im about 5'2 and 120lbs any suggestions on what kind of gun would be good for me to start with?I want to get a shotgun for next hunting season?
Remington 870 express magnum, it is a 12 guage that has average kick, and will last you a very long time. it is a great gun and you can get it for a great price. i think its somewhere around $300.I want to get a shotgun for next hunting season?
A Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge would be good to start out with. They are common and reasonably priced.Start out with birdshot and move up to buckshot and then on to slugs.
Check out the Mossberg Bantam or Super Bantam shotguns. At 5'2'; a full size stock will be too long and uncomfortable to shoot. It will also make the recoil feel worse. A 20ga. with a shorter stock would fit you better and be more fun to shoot. You can shoot anything from rabbits and squirrels or ducks and geese to turkeys with it. Buy some slugs and you're ready for deer too. A 20ga. is fine for most situations. Just be sure of your effective range and have fun. Be safe and enjoy your new shotgun.
What are you hunting with a bow, that you want to use a shotgun for?

If it's turkeys, you will be okay, if deer you will not...

Go to a reputable gun dealer, where you can try different gun lengths, and such, to see what is comfortable.....
I'd ordinarily recommend a 2 gauge pump shotgun. But considering your physical stature, you might be better served with a 20 gauge.

Whichever you chose, a Mossberg Model 300 will be a good choice. However you will need to have the stock cut to fit you and have a good recoil pad installed.

    Doc
Buy a 12 ga Maverick 88, it is a cheaper version of the Mossberg 500. It is made by Mossberg, but you can find one at walmart for $177.
You may want to start with a 20 gauge. It has a fair amount less kick than a 12 gauge, but is still powerful enough for hunting most animals.

I'd recommend reading this to get a better idea of want you want.

    http://freenj.blogspot.com/2008/05/buyin鈥?/a>
mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 it's just a matter of personal preference

    just make sure it's a 12ga.
Remington 870 is a great gun to use for all ages
A single or Double barrel, or a over %26amp; under in a 20 gauge Shotgun.*
Go to a gun shop and get what fits you the best. I'd stick with 12 gauge too. There's many different shotguns and each one of them is different in their own way. You just have to find one that fits you well.
Remington 870 express or 870 wingmaster. Go for the 3 1/2 inch magnum.
The Remington 870 would be the best.

The Remingtons use a steel receiver, which adds weight to the shotgun. More weight means less felt recoil.

12 gauge ammo has the widest variety. Everything from the 2.75'; light promo loads (1 oz. or sometimes 7/8 oz. of shot...light recoiling), up to the heavier 3'; magnum turkey loads....if you so desire.

Get a gun with the interchangable RemChokes....SK, IC, M, and F.

Remington 870 Express guns sometimes go on sale for as little as $200 at some big name sporting goods stores. (They only come with 1 choke tube though.) For under $300 you can have a decent quality, relatively low recoiling, classic AMERICAN MADE shotgun that can pretty much do it all.

Ah...and get a slug barrel with rifle sights for deer and bear hunting purposes.
Well it depends on what you plan to hunt with it. I'm a tiny girl myself, only 5'1 and barely 100lbs. I started hunting when I was younger with a Mossberg 20 ga and it was extremely comfortable and fit me perfect. It's pretty versatile too, I used it for hunting deer, geese, rabbits, squirrels..
I would go with a 410 single action H%26amp;R is a good brand

you can use it as a rifle with slugs for deer or shot for squirles or turkey

i use mine for all good all around gun

    very little kick light weight
I'm surprised nobody has suggested a semi auto shotgun yet. they absorb some of the recoil. Stoeger's are cheaper Benelli's. a well proven reliable design.
well if your using it for turkey then try 870 express cant go wrong with it great gun for a great price. if you want it for deer get a mossberg i cant be specific about what its called but its a slug gun with a scope and comes with a second barrel for turkey shots and its only like $250. i shot 2 deer with the same gun this year

I really have no idea exactly, but I can well imagine most are related to falling out of trees.A friend of mine was shooting a safety video for bow hunting when he fell from the tree on camera!,he broke his arm,and bruised some ribs.gotta imagine he was pretty embarressed too.

also what should i use for quail, pheasent, pigeon, rabbit.sorry first time interested in hunting so any thing would help.I am looking to do some turkey/hog hunting ehat kind of rifle should i use?
most places wont let you use a rifle for turkey, you have to use a shotgun, usually a 12ga, which loaded with buckshot, is good for close range hogs too. use a lighter load in it, like #6 shot for the quail phesant and rabbit though. there are a ton of good shotgun manufacturers out there, just pick one that fits your need and budget. a mossberg will run you about 250 bucks for a pump, all the way up to an automatic benelli above 1000.I am looking to do some turkey/hog hunting ehat kind of rifle should i use?
Mossberg 535 ATS shotgun, turkey edition. and You want to at least use a 30 06 for hogs! Ive been hog hunting for years in Southern Arkansas and I know for a fact that a 243 will jus piss em off and you dont want a hog pissed at ya! If im hunting out of a stand i prefer a 7mm mag. If im on the ground i use a 12 gauge with 00buck shot at least 3in. That is if i am in close quarters with hogs. If it is halfway an open area where i am hunting then i will use a 30 06. I love to turkey hunt too! I have a Mossberg 535 that i hunt with and i use the ';undertaker'; choke and i never have a longbeard get away. I killed one just earlier this evenin! It does the job very well!!!!
It is very dangerous (and maybe illegal) to hunt turkey with a rifle. If you shoot upwards and miss the turkey, that bullet could go for a quarter of a mile or more and kill someone. Best to use a shotgun, I prefer 12 gauge for turkey. I've never hunted hog, but some variety of .30 caliber would probably suffice, 30-30, 30-06, .30 carbine.
Your better off with a 12 gauge shotgun for the birds and small game. Anything else can be taken with a 243 or bigger hunting rifle. A high velocity bullet will disintegrate the small animals and birds. For a beginner try a bolt action rifle and a pump shotgun because they are very easy to operate.
    You want a shotgun....

A shotgun is versatile... Just by changing ammo you can use slugs for deer, shot for feathered critters/ rabbits and buckshot for smaller pigs.....

I am looking for a good, safe climbing deer stand for a beginner. It must come with a body harness and a video that shows how to use it.Climbing Deer Hunting Stand For Beginner?
    Tree Lounge

These hold to a tree better than any I have seen.

FOR THE SAFEST STANDS YOU KNEED A LADDER STAND

All stands can be dangerous. The user MUST understand how to use them properly. The design of the Tree Lounge is unlike any other. Gravity it what makes these grip so well.

Look at the design before you make your decision. Stands with cables have been known to fail as well. Especially descending down a tree.Climbing Deer Hunting Stand For Beginner?
I like the Summit Viper. Comes with a harness and a video that shows how to use it.Stay away from the tree lounge. I have a friend that was climbing down from the tree two years ago and the stand slipped and caught. When it caught it sprung down and threw him up and out of the stand, and he landed on his head and shoulders. It was 9 months before he could go back to work.
Summit tree stands! No question about it! I bought one for my son and they are great! Look no farther than Summit.

Can i use a pellet gun when squirrel hunting?

in Tennessee? i'm going there this summer and i want to go hunting. Can i use a pellet gun when squirrel hunting?
yes. just make sure its a powerful one, not a red ryder bb gun. many of the new pellet guns these days will shoot as fast as a .22. i sometimes use a pellet gun when i'm squirrel hunting. i'll also occasionally use a .22 or a 12 guage with 6 shot. good luckCan i use a pellet gun when squirrel hunting?
The hunting regulations put out by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency say for hunting small game:

    ';rifles and handguns using rim-fire ammunition and air rifles are legal for hunting small game except migratory birds.';

So yes, you can use an air rifle to hunt small game animals in Tennessee. However you'll have to wait to hunt squirrel until the 4th Saturday in August when the season opens.
    * Highly unlikely.*
Ask the game wardens in Tennessee if it's legal.
Go ahead. It'll work fine if it's strong enough.

Is there a regulation on how many rounds you can have in your rifle when hunting big game in Oregon?

Short answer: it depends. If you're using a semi-auto, yes; anything else, no.

    Read the hunting regs:

    http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hun鈥?/a>

    ';Semiautomatic [centerfire] rifles with a magazine capacity greater than five cartridges prohibited (except for western gray squirrel).';

Also related is you can carry any firearm, but Oregon can specify which type of firearm is legal to shoot an animal with: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/Info鈥?/a>Is there a regulation on how many rounds you can have in your rifle when hunting big game in Oregon?

  • What's the difference between dog fighting and hunting?

Yes, I am playing devil's advocate here. Can you put bias aside and answer honestly? What's the difference between dog fighting and hunting?
I had a family member who did dog fighting many years ago. He truly regrets it now.

You need to realize that most hunting kills are quick. I don't want to sing the praises of hunting because it is not something I would enjoy doing.

Dog fights are not quick they are long bloody messes and the dogs suffer a great deal. But that is only the beginning of what is wrong with it. Dogs are trained to fight by ever increasing harsh treatment. They spend their lives learning to be killers. One method of training them to kill is to use bait animals. Bait animals like rabbits cats and more docile breeds of dogs and then working their way up to more poweful dogs and then guard dogs until they are ready to fight other pit bulls. The fighting dogs learn to love the smell of blood and what it is like to kill another animal. Fighting dogs will go through many bait animals in their fighting career. Many fighting dog trainers save money by stealing family pets to be mauled by the fighting dogs.

A person who participates in dog fighting becomes callous and cruel to people as well. When my relative was into dog fighting he got in to many fights himself he bite off the noses and ears of various people. He was a very dangerous person I assure you that you would not want to have crossed his path.

Thankfully that is a life he has long since left behind. What's the difference between dog fighting and hunting?
Hunting, is done on the ground with, Guns.

Dog Fighting, is done in the air with, Fighters.
hunting is tracking a wild animal for food dog fighting is putting two animals in a position to kill or be killed (animals that are trained to kill or be killed) for a sick minded human to be entertained or to make money this is pathetically sick with no good value or resulting outcome.
    I hate both....

I think hunting has no place in civilized society....

if humans would butt out of nature, and let the natural predators flourish, there would be no ';need'; to hunt.... nature always took care of things before humans messed it up....
Hunting is used to manage wildlife populations. example if deer are not hunted there will not be enough food around to help them last through the winter - many of them would die anyway and in a less humane way. Plus the animals are used for fur and meat.

Dog fighting only serves man's indulgence for violence and gambling which is fine to a point, but those dogs are taught nothing but suffering from the start so they will be mean dogs, and they are tortured more if they lose the fight.
hunting should never be done for sport, only for eating what you kill... dog fighting is sport only and cruel in that... when you hunt, sometimes the animal eludes getting killed, many times in fact.... not the case in dog fighting...
    what do you mean, hunting?

    you can hunt mushrooms.

    generally you don't shoot them.

so let's start with, what should hunting really be called?

    sport killing.

now, what's the difference between killing an animal for sport, and fighting two animals for sport?

well, one of the dogs might live, wounded. but usually i think that dog will just be killed, one way or other. and both will suffer.
