  • What kind of hunting do you do on the weekends? Why do you hunt this animal?

Last weekend, geese %26amp; ducks. They are great sport, I love to call them in. They are fun to shoot %26amp; delicious to eat...

This weekend will be deer hunting with shotgun. I love to deer hunt. It is a real challenge %26amp; is a healthy alternative to beef. They are all delicious to eat... I put them in the freezer %26amp; we eat them all year round. What kind of hunting do you do on the weekends? Why do you hunt this animal?
I go after grouse (ptarmigan this time of year) on the weekends. There is not much preparation involved in this hunt, just grab your gun, a knife, and your dog and head into the woods. They are challenging birds in the air, and they taste great. What kind of hunting do you do on the weekends? Why do you hunt this animal?
I hunt deer, turkeys, grouse, squirrels, rabbits, and bears to eat them.

I hunt foxes, coyotes, and bobcats to control their numbers and save my chickens.

I hunt groundhogs to see them explode ...!
I hunt bobcats and coons all winter long. I use both traps and hounds. I do it because I enjoy it and it and it helps me financially get through the winter when my business is slow.
deer, duck, quail, turkey. love hunting, outdoors, shooting as well as cooking and eating them. healthier than beef, etc. kill it and grill it, man!!
Fox! B/c there are benefits from keeping their numbers down, for example the roe deers and hares are more abundant with a smaller predator threat.
right now i can only hunt small game...because i am laid off in the winter and i dont drink and hang out in bars...it keeps me from going stir crazy in the winter...
I hunt terrorists cos they're savages.
i squirrel hunt because its fun and sometimes a challange
    Coyote....

    They are worthless ....

    And a challenge to hunt.....

I really want to go hunting will you invite me to go with you?

I live in Destin Florida I am a pretty girl and am not suppose to like to hunt but would love to go hunting. Will someone tell me they have some land that I can come hunting on in Alabama or Florida or somewhere in driving distance? I really want to go hunting will you invite me to go with you?
the thing about 'going hunting' with a pretty girl you met on the internet that makes it safe is...

She is going to show up with a gun. How many internet perverts or even hardened serial rapists choose to take on armed women? Answer? Zero.

Let's say it is a scam, ugly woman, ugly man, etc posing as a hot babe. He is going to go suprise a person who also has a gun on his own land. I think it would be pretty easy for the land owner to take care of himself.

Seems to me going on a 'hunting date' is probably safer than when two internet people who have been flirting with IM or whatever decide to meet in a ';coffee house'; someplace.I really want to go hunting will you invite me to go with you?
your nuts, you would post a question like this, ok on second thoughts I don't know who should feel more afraid the person that trusts you to come hunting with them or you for being so dumb looking for a stranger to go hunting with, unless of course your already dead and you can't be hurt more
Advertise in your local newspaper for a Hunting Companion, or a Landowner who will allow you to Hunt on his property, who also Hunts.* If I lived near you, we would definitely be going Hunting, and not just because you are a pretty woman.*
I hunt ';pretty girls';, so looks like your in luck. Like they say, a pig with lipstick is still a pig, but it will be a dead one if I see it when hunting. Sorry you can't come along.
for some reason i have a feeling your far from a girl, much less a pretty one. but if you are by some chance in hell. its not wise to ask strangers!
i hunt these wild pigs, trap them and sell them live.they stink and ain't worth eating in my opinion but its fun.
Be good. Tell your Daddy you want to go hunting and maybe he will take you.

sorry i live in the great state of tennessee :D
i stay in georgia and we have major dear problems. lets you in i take care of those problems with a couple 12 gauges....
O.K. Boy's .....this smells like a set up!
i don't kill it unless i need to.
    i dont hunt

What do you think about hunting, good or bad ?

do you think hunting is good or bad and why

only stong opinions pleaseWhat do you think about hunting, good or bad ?
If the good Lord didn't want us to hunt he wouldn't have made meat so tasty.

I hunt for the table, from September through to February my family and I can look forward to duck, pheasant and partridge.

The rest ot the year rabbit, hare, pigeon and venison.

All the above is shot and prepared with care. The food is fresh, tasty and far better than the shite you buy pre packed from Tesco or walmart.

P*ssed off with answering this question so I've copied and pasted a previous answer. I still haven't changed my views either. What do you think about hunting, good or bad ?
Hunting is necessary for the health of species. I'm an undergrad in Wildlife and Fisheries and can attest to this fact. If there were no hunters, there would be NO revenue from hunting licenses, ammunition, supplies etc. to buy land for these animals and to keep them protected. Groups like PETA don't donate a red cent to wildlife preservation, and would rather run ads about furry animals than to spend their money wisely. (I guess snakes and lizards don't count as animals to them.)

If not for hunting, entire populations would die off from overbrowsing, disease, etc. It's a good and necessary thing for both the animals and humans. It brings healthy, natural food for the table and creates fond memories.

Just because you're a hunter doesn't mean that you can't be an animal lover. I absolutely LOVE animals, and still get the warm fuzzy feeling inside about them. However, I just have a sound understanding of ecology, unlike most anti-hunters that base their opinions on emotions alone.
It depends on what you are hunting and why, if you are eating what you hunt it is acceptable, I believe there is no other acceptable reason to hunt. ';Overpopulation'; is BS, humans are the most overpopulated species on earth and nobody wants to address that. The animals were here first and we have no right to control their populations.
Hunting is a culture of tradition and part of that tradition is teaching each new generation of hunters respect and admiration of wildlife and all its wonders. State wildlife and parks agencies keep studies of all the species and use hunting as a tool to keep the food chain in check. Besides, there is an ebb and flow throughout the seasons of different species and they try to see that what is harvested doesn't exceed what would die through the winter anyways. If all hunting stopped tomorrow, there wouldn't be enough food for that entire population to thrive. So the question becomes, what is worse for that animal, a quick ethical kill to be eaten by the sportsman, or letting many animals slowly starve and disease to set in?

I think here awhile back they stopped coyote hunting in parts of KS. Next thing they knew, there was a sharp deline in native bird and rabbit populations. It threw the food chain all out of whack. Imagine if no animals were hunted.

I do concur with the idea that you only hunt to eat what you kill and respect the animal. I think some of the animal rights folks have misconceptions (as I am sure we do of them as well) about hunters that we just throw most animals away. I was disappointed to find out when talking with a guy from eastern OK that wild hog didn't taste that good at all. I was wanting to eventually try my hand at it, but he said it tastes awful, so that pretty much removed that option for me.

I read a report in a KS wildlife magazine here awhile back; it showed the figures for what PETA does with ';rescued animals';. A large percentage of them are euthanized, I understand their persepective but that is pretty hypocritical. And as a final thought I would love any hardcore animal rights activist to drive 300 miles in KS in the dead of the night and tell me that I shouldn't kill any deer. Should we stop driving too? Around opening day of pheasant season you'll see a deer or two every mile of any highway here in northern KS.
i think hunting is good for a number of reasons. first off it means spending quality time with my nephew or father or brothers. It also gives me the chance to enjoy nature in general. Its not like i shoot any animal i see, on occasion i simply watch the wildlife play around. I also believe that without hunting deer inparticular we would have a huge problem with overpopulation, we already do! our family consumes at least 3-4 deer in a season. now on the other hand killing leopards and lions and elephants for the fun is not right i dont care how you look at it.
well since you have asked your question in the hunting answers what kind of answers do you expect to get......other than the occasional bunny tree hugger that comes here to harass us I would say everyone on here likes to hunt and thinks it is fine......we do not need to explain ourselves to anyone
hunt only to eat. if you hunt for the kill, it's for the wrong reason. Have fun hunting, be outdoors, with family and friends. It is a sport, but do it for the food.
i love to hunt...i dont shoot an animal just to kill something..humans have been hunting since time began..if you are against hunting for the sport of it and to put food on the table..go to a slaughter house..
Hunting should be taught to all who will learn. Respect for life, and many survival skills are learned. Why would you ask a bunch of hunters such a question??
its a great thing, and we as hunters do far more then PETA freaks.

so its win-win for us and our prey.
    Bad.

hurting animals and killing them is horrible. I am an animal lover myself, and I am a vegetarian. I would not kill animals as a hobby. That is just pathetic and sad.

    hope this helps

Im looking for a gun that can be used as both a hunting rifle and a home defence rifle.?

i heard rifles can over penetrate but i heard that can be remedied by hollow pointing the bullets, but still i am worried that even if certain bullets are hollow pointed they would still over penetrate. Also I heard that hollow points are inaccurate is that true? and lastly i really prefer the Lee Enfield .303 , the M1 Garand, the 3a4 , the 3a3, and the m1 carbine, are those good choices for what i want? (yeah i like bolt action rifles)Im looking for a gun that can be used as both a hunting rifle and a home defence rifle.?
....for close quarters, a shotgun (w/ BB or OO size shot) is really your best choice for home defense....a semi m1 carbine would be reasonable (but not for hunting)....though if you prefer a bolt rifle, that infers a little more reach out and touch (and over penetration will be a real concern) and slow sustained rate of fire....however a 12ga Browning A-bolt with a sabot slug is a good choice for hunting too (w/o having to worry what is miles down range) though I would never suggest using shot shells through a rifled barrel....

....if you have a perimeter to defend (and clear field of fire), a SK, mini 14 or ar-15 will give a higher sustained rate of fire with good accuracy 200-300m....as well a M1A1 (.308) or a Garand (.30-06) will offer heavier hitting power and good accuracy 300-600m++....but not legal for hunting in many places....

....though back to the bolt actions....the Enfield makes a good elephant gun (lol), depending upon your proficiency and quality of the rifling (remember a lot of these rifles have been fired literally 10's of thousands of times) should be good for hunting or perimeter defense 300-600m++....but for close quarters, hahaha, unless you have a bayonet....then take it off and stab the f'r....just remember to have a .357 in your other hand in case it gets stuck....lol

**edit**Im looking for a gun that can be used as both a hunting rifle and a home defence rifle.?
In regards to accuracy, the ranges you will be dealing with in a home defense situation are less than 10 yards, so hollow points will not really be zooming off on odd tangents or anything of that sort.

If you want a good hunting rifle that'll also serve you well as a home-defense rifle, I can suggest the Ruger Tropical 1 .375 H%26amp;H magnum. This is unfortunately a single-shot, but with the .375 H%26amp;H round, you can stop a buffalo, so you can definately stop a man.

But for home-defense? A rifle? Maybe get yourself a Mossberg 590, or a pistol (plenty of threads here on CCW and personal defense pistol preferences). Rifles in general aren't that good for home defense. But if you like bolt action rifles, I'm tellin ya, go for the Ruger No. 1 It's less than a grand, and it WILL stop anything you hit.
You are asking for a double weapon. One for long range shooting at game animals and another for very short range, inside the home use. The long range gun should range 100 to 300 yards with good knockdown for all game and the short range which must have a fast muzzle swing and be on your person at all times in your home. This also must have knock down power but little secondary penetration. It should go in and rattle around but not come out. In home if it penetrates the target of a full size person and goes out it may penetrate a house wall. If you miss and it penetrates a wall it could also do the same in the neighbors wall. For home security, know who is in your home. Most home intrusions, the intruder has been in the home in the recent past. Who do you intend to defend against? Other neighbors? Gangs, why are they bothering you?
Hollow point bullets in rifle calibers will penetrate walls just as bad as any other bullet.

The only rifle I consider useful for hunting and defensive use is a lever-action carbine in pistol calibers.

My Social Rifle is a pre-safety Rossi M-92 Saddle Ring Carbine in .357 Magnum. If you don't handload, a Rossi M-92 in .44 RemMag or .45 LC, or a Marlin M-1894 in the same calibers would be a better choice.

The major advantage to using a pistol caliber lever-action rifle as your hunting and defense rifle is that you can use high performance magnum loads for hunting, and for in home defensive use, you can load it with .38 SPL or .44 SPL ammo for adequate power and less danger of over penetration. And you have ten fast shots on tap if you need them.

The .303 Enfield, or .30-'06 M-1 Garand are lousy choices for home defense, unless you live way out in the country and want to defend your home at long range. An M-1 Carbine would be a fair home defense rifle, but it is pretty iffy as a deer cartridge.

BTW, the M-1 Garand and M-1 Carbine are both semi-automatic firearms, not bolt-actions.

    Doc
If you are going to use a long gun for HD ir should be a riot gun or carbine

Of the guns you listed the M1Carbine is the only one I would choose, but I'm not so sure that I like the caliber for hunting anything over small deer or small hogs

The Garand, 03s and Enfield are great hunting guns (unless you are restricted to five rounds then the Garand is out) but I think they would be too cumbersome to be considered a suitable HD gun unless you plan on using them for perimeter defense

I don't think I would ever restrict myself to a bolt action for interior HD these days
from a serious rifle, the hollowpoints are still going to rip though walls like nobodies business.

Check http://www.theboxotruth.com/ for wall penetration tests.

The M-1 carbine won't cut it as a hunting rifle, the M1 Garand and the 1903A3/4 are a bit hard to find, and for the same amount of cash you can get a brand spanking new bolt action rifle by remington, winchester, tikka, savage, cz, and a whole slew of others.

It would help us help you if we knew what kind of hunting you were interested in.

Get an SKS, hard to go wrong there, and it is inexpensive.
okay, first you want two separate guns. any of those above rifles would be fine for hunting deer, except the m1 carbine. it is good out to 100 m or so, but i wouldn't suggest hunting with it. the reason that bullets over penetrate is because they are high powered and high velocity. as for hollow points, they will penetrate but not as far as a full metal jacket. hollow point bullets are very accurate.

as for a home defense weapon, get yourself a nice 12 gauge shotgun...that is by far the best home defense out there.....

hope this helps you out....and good luck with your choice
Rifles in most situations are not good home defense weapons. Commonly one would use a handgun for home defense and a rifle for hunting.

I think for your situation you should consider two firearms for your two scenarios. Hunting I would look at a 30-06 and for home defense a colt 1911 variant. Hope that helps
Rifles are never good choices for home defense, and hollow-point bullets can be relied upon to expand, go through a person, and keep going a long, long ways. If you must, you'll want something quite short and handy like the Remington model 7, in a light caliber with a varmint bullet.
The gun that fits the bill is a Mossberg 500 field / security model... It comes with 2 barrels. One for barrel is for hunting and when you get home swap in the 18 1/2 inch defense barrel..... Take a look below... If you really want a rifle then be aware ALL rifle bullets can overpenetrate... Use hollow or soft point rifle bullets for less penetration but be aware they can still endanger a family member or neighbor in the next house..... I have a Mossberg 500 for home defense AND a Ruger Mini 14..... The Ruger is smaller, light weight AND MOST OF ALL its polite looking.... If you justifiable had to shoot an attacker in your home there still is a possibilty that a district attorney will still have a grand jury hearing to see if you should be charged..... Do you really want him holding up some big military type rifle???? Get a Mossberg 500 or a Ruger Mini 14....
in an urban situation, a rifle may be the worst choice for home defense, even with a hollow point bullet. As noted, the main reason is over penetration and liability. A much better choice is a good shotgun with a 20'; barrel. this will work very well for home defense, and with slugs, can be used for hunting any north American animal out to 100 yards. yes this limits you to closer shots for hunting. But it is a trade off to get the home defense weapon/hunting weapon as one. Now if your anticipating the end of the world, or massive riots with a breakdown of civilization, then by all means go with a better ranging, faster shooting semi auto rifle in a heavier caliber such as the Springfield M'14 in .308 caliber. but the best choice is going to be, get one type for home defense (shotgun with short barrel) and one for hunting.

    good luck
I would agree with most answers, a shot gun would be your best bet. or a pistol,,,,,,rifle as stated can pass through and wound a by stander putting you in deep crap,,,,a good load of 000 buck or 00 buck works much better,,,,

Stay away from the M1 cabine,,,,,,,its rather weak and not a good choice.
    What are you hunting?

Sounds like you need a shotgun.

You can use buck shot for home defense or even some hunting.

If you need to take down a bigger animal, just use slugs.

You can use birdshot for smaller animals and birds obviously.
THE ONES YOU PREFER WOULD BE FINE...A HOLLOW POINT IS NOT ANY LESS ACCURATE THAN A REGULAR SHOT...IT JUST DEPENDS ON YOUR AIM...GOOD LUCK
Get yourself a 30-30.* Thats all you'll need.*
get a pump action shotgun. and buckshot.
First of all are you living in a state that has a castle doctrine ?

if so your in good shape , if not I'd move to a state that believes in the constitution and the bill of rights .

    2. The weapons aren't exactly the choice weapons for home defense . Think about it , your going to check your home for intruders, ever think of the length of your weapons ? its hard to navigate the muzzle on possible target or worse targets coming around a corner in your home (cutting the pie )

    3. Realistically a rifle is for long distance like your Lee Enfield 303 and your M-1 Garand are for basic infantry and snipers of W.W.2 and Vietnam era

    4. Now if you want to protect yourself your family and home you should purchase a 12 Ga. pump get rid of the shoulder stock and get a adjustable M-4 style stock by Knox Ind. this way you've given yourself the advantage of having heavy firepower and the ability to navigate through your home and keeping muzzle on target get a fiber optic scope for quick acquisition targeting or a very good laser / light combination

make sure it is grip activated so you dont remove your hands

from your weapon at any time

    5. if you live in an apartment I suggest bean bag rounds or bird shot (however my rule is bird shot is for birds slugs are for thugs) if you live in a house 00 buck if you live in the country slugs and 00 buck stack them slug ,00 slug , 00 and so on and if you don't kill the threat make sure it cant have kids ( if they are that stupid to break into your home they got no need to breed )

    6. Last but not least buy a handgun in .45 cal . its a big and slow round but very very effective in stopping power . make sure it isn't a cheaply made handgun either stay away from highpoint its garbage ( the slide breaks around the recoil spring ) and make sure your pistol can handle +P rounds i prefer CorBon +P sometimes an intruder wears a vest seems to be the new thing now so aim at the pelvic region you'll most likely hit bone if they cant stand they cant fight .

in short you want 2 different weapons 1 for home and 1 for hunting. good luck in your desision .
the m1 or an sks with a 20 round fixed mag,
    sks

How can I achieve the greatest amount of kills;when shooting/hunting crows with my .22 caliber air rifle?

Thanks for the detailsHow can I achieve the greatest amount of kills;when shooting/hunting crows with my .22 caliber air rifle?
Try putting on head-to-toe cammo, and sitting within your range of an owl decoy. It will probably only work once, since they will remember, but if you have other areas to go, giver! Shotgun works sooo much nicer with a distress crow call and a nice canopy to conceal you. The 'pass' shooting is priceless. They keep coming under the canopy to see what is wrong until you miss one, then they are gone. Good Luck.

Lock and load. How can I achieve the greatest amount of kills;when shooting/hunting crows with my .22 caliber air rifle?
It seems there is a hunting season for crows (124 days/year) and you need a license to shoot them. Apparently Hawaii is the only state where you cannot shoot crows.

(When you want to do research, ask a librarian.)

What type of .12 Gage loads should i use for squirrel hunting?

should i use regular game loads in my .12G?

or should i use bird or buck shot?

its my first time using it for squirrels, i dont want to blow a huge hole in it...lol.What type of .12 Gage loads should i use for squirrel hunting?
In a 12 guage I would recommend a #4 or #5 lead shot, 2 3/4 inch shell, low brass is all you'll need. Winchester makes a X124 that should work well.

The reason you want a larger pellet is for energy, to penetrate the hide of a fox squirrel, which is very tough.

But I might add, in early season when there is a lot more leaves on the trees, you may want to shoot a #6 shot size. This gives you a lot more pellets than a #4 and is sufficient for taking squirrels. As the leaves come down, you can go to a larger pellet size, #4 for instance and efficiently bring the squirrel down.

I am the ammo man, and work the ammo counter at a large sporting goods store in Mich. What type of .12 Gage loads should i use for squirrel hunting?
That sorta depends on the time of the season.

If you are hunting early in the season when there are a lot of leaves and it is really tough to ge a clear shot, then 71/2 would work in a 12.

If you are hunting later in the season when all the leaves are gone then 6 is fantastic! 7 1/2 will not give you the range needed at that time of year.

#4 and #5 are designed with the Turkey, fox, and coyote hunters in mind and are not the best for squirrels if you want good eating.

Anything bigger is strictly overkill, but fun if you have a housefull of treerat invaders.
I would use regular 2 3/4 shells but you can get high brass for extra power but since its a 12 gauge you should be good to go.

I used 3 inch mags for squirrel but that was a 20 gauge and not a 12 though.

Its more on personal preference if you dont like performance of normal get high brass but DONT GET 3 INCH MAGS for 12. Keep in mind i only got 3 for 20 gauge.

I would go with #6 shot

    (((((Conclusion:

Use 2 3/4 or 2 3/4 high brass with #6 shot or 5 since they get a strong coat when it gets cold out.))))
Don't use Buck shot unless you like your squirrel in several pieces:o) Use a #6 bird shot 2 3/4'; load. Still, if any way possible, aim at the head so you don't ruin so much of meat with shot pellets. The way I prefer to hunt squirrel is with a 22 and shoot them in the head. Makes them easier to clean.
NO not buck shot -- the pellets would fly right right on by and miss..... I use #6 game loads... 2 3/4 inch cartridges are fine.... If mr squirrel is quite a distance and / or you want to obliterate him then step up to 3 inch turkey loads.....

This stuff works real good on small critters....

    http://www.remington.com/products/ammuni鈥?/a>
I would use something like a 9 or an 8 shot. Obviously you don't need the bigger pellets because a squirrel is small. So with a 9 shot your going to have more shot and hence a greater chance of killing it. Farther shots may require something more like a 7 1/2.
no. 4 shot i find is the best for any game of the squirrel/rabbit size.

    yer bird shot no. 4

Um mate just grab you 22 and shot it in the head if your an accurate marksmen you shouldn't have to much trouble

but the shot gun is much easier
Use standard 2 3/4 inch loads with number 4, 5, or 6 shot. Those are good loads for squirrels. Buckshot is way too large. A squirrels hide is tough, so stay away from the smaller shot (7 1/2 and 8 shot) as well.

my dad always told me if i couldnt hit em in the head with a 22 i didnt need to go. That said, they make small game loads just for things liek rabbits and squirrels. I still use a 22 to this day when i go squirrel hunting.
Bird shot is alright but you may have to take out alot of shots, the best thing to use is a 22 and shoot him in the head!* Good Hunting!*
Any 7/8 ounce to 1 1/4 ounce load of #6 to #4 will work fine. 7 1/2 will work, but I prefer the larger shot size and better penetration.
buck shot would be way too much for squirrels. there wouldn't be much left. I would go smaller with 7 1/2 or 6 and you should be good to go. Have fun and good luck!
Game loads with a shot size of #6. No magnum, no buckshot, no heavy load needed. Your going after Squirrel.

buck shot and all that well be left is a few hairs.

    use bird shot.
Use number 4 or 5 bird shot for the Squirrel for best results.*
I use 4 shot with good results
What have squirrels ever done to you? Why do you feel that they deserve to die?

At least give them a sporting chance by using a sling shot.
