Looking for a good hunting gun?

I am looking for one gun to use to hunt squirrell, rabbit and turkey. What is the best gun for the job? Will a 410 cover it or do i need something a little bigger?Looking for a good hunting gun?
For squirrel and rabbit I use a .22, but a .410 wouldn't be bad. The smallest you can go on turkey is 20GA. But .20 Ga is an OK gun for rabbit and squirrel. If you ever get into hunting deer a 20Ga will work well for that too.Looking for a good hunting gun?
A 20 gauge will do it, but you will be ahead to get a 12 gauge. Squirrels and rabbits are small, and pretty easy, but turkey are tough birds and a 12 will give you effective killing power out to 40 yards. Get a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. Both are pump actions and are excellent all-around guns.

(The .410 bore is really not a beginners gun - it's more of an experts gun. Plus, the ammo is more expensive and harder to find.)
When I was a younger lad we used hunt turkey with a rifle. Go with a .243 or better yet for your hunting purposes, a marlin lever action in .44 mag .357mag 30/30 ( if you are a bigger lad). get something relatively small. a lever action should fit your needs.

or you could go with a .22 mag. a.22 hornet, or a .22/250 (the most expensive of the 3 .22 caliber options).

BUT, if you really want a shotgun go with a .20 gauge (or a 28 gauge but the rounds are a bit more expensive) a 410 is to small.
NO!!!

A 410 will not work for Turkey. A .410 is great as a survival shot gun where you would hunt only rabbits and squirrel.

All these critters are Best taken with a 20 or a 16. For Turkey, a 12 is a must.

Why fool around. Get a good 12 with a few extra barrels; one for Turkey, and one for Deer.

If you get a quality gun like a Remington, Winchester, or Bennelli, you have the one gun to hunt anything.

Good luck
A lot will depend on the state you are hunting in. Some states require certain shot for turkey. Illinois is one of those. I am not sure you will find that type of shot in a .410 shell.

A .410 would be hard pressed to fill the bill for turkey. Unless you are extremely still and quiet and the turkey comes within 15 yards, you will probably just wound a turkey. They are very tough and usually take some pellets to the neck and head to kill them. A 410 would have less of those so needs a shorter distance to shoot and kill.

If you got a 12 ga. you would be pretty much set for most types of hunting including deer. There are so many different chokes, barrel lengths and shot sizes as well as powder charges, it would be fairly easy to find one just right for your listed needs.

Good Luck.
Mate get a 12gauge. 12 gauge has the widest variety of shells so when you want to start shooting larger game, you will have a gun for it. The 410 will kill a rabbit but if you want to start shooting larger animals or use buchsot then get a 12 gauge. You wont regret it
If you can only have 1 gun then I can only suggest a 22LR if it's legal where you are.

For rabbit and squirrel a .410 is more than enough, some air weapons will do the job.

For turkey you need at least a .410 but a 12 guage is a better choice.

Ian M

you could do it with a 410 but a 12gauge would work better.

a 410 would be fine for rabbit and squirrel but hard pressed for a turkey.

NO a 12gauge well not blow a rabbit away, nor a squirrel if you use the right loads.
Ha you don't need anything as big a a 12 gauge, 410 should do the job and possibly a 20 gauge. 12 gauge would blow the squirrel to pieces and same with rabits.
I'd go with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Very versatile...
nahh a 410 won't cover it. Try an ak-47, hahahaahhahahaha
