How can i stop my cat from hunting?

i do give my cat all the food he wants, but he loves hunting outside, and i think he's been eating rats. i really want to stop him from doing that, is there any way that i can stop him?How can i stop my cat from hunting?
You don't. If he's hunting and eating rats, birds, rabbits, etc. he is doing what he is born to do. Cats are predators, even though they have food and we take care of them, the instinct and urge to hunt is still there and nothing we do can change that. Even if kept indoors, they will stalk and kill any mice that happen to get in, or bugs, or your feet.

He is just being a cat. Hunting, killing and eating rodents, birds, rabbits, etc is what cats do and there is nothing we can do about it.How can i stop my cat from hunting?
Cats don't dont normally eat rats if theyre well fed, they hunt them down instinctively and he probably plays with them before he kills them by biting them.

Turning your cat into an indoor one will probably be difficult because he will run out as soon as you open the door. Believe me I have tried to do so with my cat and she used to watch the doors like a hawk waiting for someone to open it.

Try getting some games to keep your cat entertained like a fake mouse on a string, you can get loads of different toys from your local pet store. Maybe this will lessen the amount of rats he kills. Keep up to date with his vaccines though and keep an eye for fleas.

Oh and always keep some dry food in a bowl in case your cat does get hungry.

Goodluck!!!!
How can you stop your cat from hunting. Answer is ,you can`t.

Like many of the answers above mine it mentions that cats are

natural predators and have been doing this for several thousands

of years. It is instinctive for a cat to hunt prey just as it is for you

to walk. You could lock your cat up in your house for the rest of

its life. That would stop it from hunting. But if you do that then i

want you to promise me that you will have your arms and legs

surgically removed. Then you and your cat can live happily

ever after.
I agree with everyone that said that hunting comes naturally to cats and without being an indoor only cat, the hunting will continue.

On a different note, your cat may be trying to make up nutritionally for what his food may be lacking in. What type of food are you feeding? If your food is ';Pet Grade'; (ie Purina, Science Diet, Iams, Alley Cat, Friskies, Fancy Feast, etc.) the quality is very low. These foods are made with everything from hooves, beaks, and feathers, to roadkill and euthinized pets. These things aren't digestible nor nutritious and leaves your cat feeling very hungry. ';Human Grade'; food is USDA approved meats, high in protein, and fully balanced and digestible. Some great brands you could feed would be: Wellness, Merrick, Weruva, Avoderm, Evo, Nature's Variety, Tiki, etc.

My experience tells me that if you were to get your kitty on a high quality diet that the hunting would decrease if not go away all together.
the only way to stop him is to keep him inside. cats have a natural instinct to hunt their food. If you dont want to keep him inside and are afriad of having him contract something from the rats he may be eating..find a way to lessen the rats around such as traps and also keep your cat up to date on vaccines so he will be less susseptable for possible illnesses
The same way you stop the rain from falling, you don't

Don't put a bell on him, that'll only make it worse. I know it sounds weird but they proved that cats with bells catch more than cats without bells

Sorry but all you can do is keep him inside or learn to live with it.
No. Not unless he's indoor only.

Cats are genetically programmed to hunt for food, it's hard wired into them. Considering the dangers of eating a rat that may have been eating poison....I'd keep the cat in or at least under supervision. Or get a cat kennel for his time outside.
You can keep him inside, and inside cat

but if ur cat is bringing u dead animals u should award and pet him. When a cat brings u a dead animal its him bringing u a gift, saying i love you, and he wants to be loved back, so never scream at you cat for killing a bird, rat etc.
The only thing that stopped my cat from catching birds was to put a collar on her with about 4 bells.. so even if she thought it would ring.

It didn't help the birds because they can't hear it but it threw her hunting off.

Be warned that those how hunt cats can locate them too.

I would leave him alone ... he's just doing what he likes... Make sure to put some flea meds on him though so you don't get bubonic plague! haaha.

good luck
no cats are crazy for the hunting, its just their nature. its how they survive in the wild. but even domesticated well fed cats keep doing it. they must find it fun. they usually play with their prey for a bit before they eat it. i stoped my cat eating a baby mouse once and he ignored me for a couple of days cos i spoiled his fun.
I'm afraid that cats are natural predators - however much they have to eat, they will still follow their instincts to chase something that runs or flies.

The only way to stop him would be to turn him into a indoor only cat.
All that you have to do is to: A. Keep the Cat indoors

OR

B. Don't let the cat get out of the backyard
You can't, or maybe try this- feed him rats, he may go out and hunt a tin of cat food instead!
keep your cat inside
