What's an appropriate caliber rifle for coyote hunting?

.223, 243, 270, 22/250, or for long range .308What's an appropriate caliber rifle for coyote hunting?
The best choices for your intended purpose are the 222 or 22-250...... I prefer the 22-250.*What's an appropriate caliber rifle for coyote hunting?
Depending on the range, anything from a .22 Long Rifle w/hollow-points to a .25-06 Remington. Also, do you want to keep the pelt? Then use a .22 Magnum with solids or a .223 with ball ammo.

i agree with most above listed are good choices good luck and good hunting
.243, .270, or .308
David S uses a .220 swift for them 'yotes. he also sometimes uses a .22-250 and has been known to use .308 aswell. he prefers the very long range of the .220 swift with its fast and flat trajectory it is very hard to beat. when the wind blows he will switch to a .22-250.
IMO, any cartridge from .223 Rem (5.56 NATO) or larger will be fine. My preference would be for the .250-3000 Savage with light bullets, or a .243 Win.

Some folks like to use .22 WMR or even .17 HMR rifles, but I'd rather use a centerfire cartridge that I can reload.

Doc
Basically any centerfire from the 17 rem thru on up to 30 cals. would be appropriate for coyotes. You want something fairly flat shooting so rule out 30-30 and other short range cartridges unless you plan on limiting yourself to very short ranges. Most coyote hunters I know use fast flat shooting calibers such as 22-250, 220 Swift, 223 Rem, 222, 204 Ruger, 17 Rem. When the wind blows 243 or 308 might be a better choice as the heavier bullets buck the wind better. My personal favourite is the 204 Ruger. Fast, flat shooting and enough power to kill coyotes out to around 400 yards. It also makes a great gopher gun in the summer.
You will want something that has a flat trajectory over a long distance, as varmint hunting is generally a fairly long shot activity. Any cartridge from as small as a 22 Hornet to any of the 243 (6mm) caliber cartridges. Any bigger bullet caliber will do, but you will need to be very familiar with the cartridges drop over distance rate.
I'm with Doc, though my personal choice of quarter-bores would be 257 Roberts, not exactly a huge difference. (I just got on a theme once, so I have 6mm Rem, 257 Rbts, 7 %26amp; 8mm Mauser).
.308 or .303 !!!
I think the .243 makes a wonderful coyote round. Others think that the .17 remington is great. The truth is there are hundreds of good rounds.

You want something that shoots flat, because you may need to take long range shots.

You want something that isn't too big as you want to minimize fur damage

You want something that is big enough to kill quickly and cleanly.

Just balance all of those based on your abilites, and you will be fine
223 22 mag 22-250 25-06 243
My friend blew a coyote in half with is 7 mag so that might be a little to much but since your probably not eating it it wont matter.

I wouldn't go with anything smaller then a .223. You can use .22's ect but I would only use those if you want to hear a dog yelp and scream in pain if it isn't a clean shot. So .223+ %26amp; Don't go too big if you want the pelt.
223 ammo costs as much as 30.06 sometimes.

I go with 17hmr, easy headshots at or under 125m.
to make it interesting us a .22 WRM...just kidding..I would go out and buy a AK-47 or M-4 carbine..and go nuts and shoot up the place..teach that evil coyote to case roadrunners...
around here in s.w. va. bring whatcha got
