What kind of dog should i get (for hunting purposes) ?

I am looking to get a dog for overall hunting uses, and was wondering what kind would be best for overall hunting, i know that retrievers and labradors are best for small bird and duck but not good for the larger animals, and pointers are good for pheasant and larger animals but not for small birds like retrieving, but i am interested in hunting them all, bird, mountain lion, bobcat, bear, and coati, what kind of dog should i get, or should i just wait and get two different species, thank youWhat kind of dog should i get (for hunting purposes) ?
My neighbor has an 80 lb female Visla that he has trained to point and retrieve. He also uses it to tree raccoons, and track hogs. However, he does not let it bay the hogs because it is also the family pet, and he doesn't want a cornered boar ripping apart the family dog.

I had never seen a Visla before he bought her. They are pretty dogs. Originally from Hungary if I remember correctly. He really didn't have to train her much at all. She took right to the outdoors, and once she got used to the noise of the guns she pointed instinctively. Retrieving took her a little longer to learn, but she gets upland birds and wetland fowl with equal skill now, and she's a strong swimmer.

She also has a great temperament. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs, people, and the local squirrel population.

You mentioned using a dog on a mountain lion. I do not consider this to be a great idea. Mountain lions are as dangerous as African lions, and will readily attack anything that threatens them. If you value this dog, I would not use it to hunt mountain lions. What kind of dog should i get (for hunting purposes) ?
It can depend on the type of dog, its parents, and the training you give it. Actually, if i would pick a dog for a bear dog, i would probably pick a Jack Russell. These dogs think that they are big dogs so they can corner a bear, but they are smart enough to know that they have met their match. I believe that you could also train them for bird hunting also. But don't get a quiet Jack Russell. That is a mistake I made. I advise you to get a hyper Jack Russell. They are very good dogs and smarter than whips. They can be trained for hunting anything.
Well if you want a hunting dog, you should get a Beagle, because that's what they a purposely bred for! But I don't think they would be good for Mountain Lions or Bears either. But maybe a big strong dog or something. But I don't know much about Beagles exept the fact that they are perposely bred for hunting.

Hope that helped!

= )
I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but the best overall hunting dog without a doubt is the Standard Poodle. That is what they were bread to do, they've got the nose and the brains to get the job done.

Try looking at this website and it will tell you good hunting dogs. At the sources. Theres types of dogs you should get like gun dogs or hounds.
well i wouldnt ever plan on gunting a cougar because the chances of getting one are very slim. the average cougar has a territory range of 150-300 miles and if you are lucky enough to get a scent track on a cougar you would more than likely never see it, they are very smart animals with good eye site and sense of smell. Also sending a dog to find a cougar is the most retarded thing i have ever heard of, a cougar is a Apex predator and would ghost your dog in the blink of an eye, so if your using dogs you better have 2 because a cougar will never attack anything unless it is alone. also, the average cougar stands 2.5 feet at the shoulders, is 8 feet long to the tail, and weighs an average of 170lbs - their jumping ability is 20 feet vertically and 40 feet horizontally, and can run up to 35mph. And cougars have been known to take bull moose no problem. another thing a story i read from california - there was a guy whose dog went missing, he thought it was strange since there was a 7ft fenced in cennel that it was in but he thought nothing of it, so then his second dog made a crying yelp and he went running just to see a cougar grabbing his 160lb pitbull by the neck and breaking it, then with the dog in his mouth the cougar jumped over the 7ft fence and took the dog for a meal to come. - So yeah if you think you are going cougar hunting you are wrong, the cougar is hunting you the whole time, you just wont see it or hear it but your dog will smell it.

Anyways i would get a Lab because they work for ducks, pheasants, etc, all the things you should be hunting for instead of cougars!!!!
